Such a charming town !!! We have such vivid memories of watching the 1994 Winter Games, when there. It’s incredible to see where everything happened, much like when we visited Lake Placid, New York on ski trips. The intimacy of these two host cities is amazing to experience.

The Olympic Games in Lillehammer, set a bar that will never be surpassed. Pure magic !!!

Comment on Lillehammer, Norway: An Introduction to Norway’s Olympic Town by Tina Morrison (nee Gunnarson) /lillehammer-norway/#comment-1048522 Sun, 19 Apr 2026 00:09:02 +0000 /?p=42758#comment-1048522 My maternal grandfather was born in Lillehamer. Maihaugen is amazing. Both my parents and I were born in Biri, they dragged me, kicking and screaming, to Australia way back in 1959. I’ve always wanted to move back. I did go to the Winter Olympics and loved it. I love Australia and Norway. There are only approximately 3700 Norwegian born Australians here.

Stayed at a Scandic hotel just two.blocks from the train station.it was a beautiful place. Visited family near by in Biri. My genealogy that I have dates back to 1604 from that area.. loved seeing my grandfather’s birthplace and my grandmother’s family’s home . Also the oldest family farm dating back to 1604. That farm house was rebuilt in 1898 and the barn in 1937.

My cousin’s college dorm was moved there. My family farm is located in Biri. The exhibitions are beautiful. There is a lot of history there. The Cafe has great food. It is a must see if you are in the area.

Comment on Lillehammer 1994: Remembering the Winter Olympics by Vegard R /lillehammer-1994-winter-olympics/#comment-1048495 Sat, 18 Apr 2026 17:36:40 +0000 /?p=72192#comment-1048495 I lived in Norway in the late 70s and have been in love with the country ever since. One activity I picked up was cross-country skiing. In fact, the town I lived in was Rena, which is just east and over the mountain from Lillehammer. Of course, Norway is the home of skiing and the Norwegians are “bonkers” about the sport. In any event, probably the biggest disappointment for Norway in the 1994 Olympics is that the men lost the 4x10km cross-country skiing relay by 0.4 seconds to Italy. Imagine losing by 0.4 seconds on your home turf (or snow)! But that wasn’t the end of the story. Four years later in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, the Norwegians and Italians faced off again. This time the Norwegians were victorious, beating the Italians by less than 0.1 seconds! So, 2 races, over a total of 80km (~50 miles) were decided, in aggregate, by less than 0.4 seconds, in favor of the Italians! But, once again, that wasn’t the end of the story. Four years later in 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah (US), the Norwegians beat the Italians by just 0.3 seconds! In summary: Race #1 – Italy by 0.3 seconds; Race #2 – Norway by <0.1 seconds; and Race #3 by 0.3 seconds. In other words 120km (75 miles) of racing decided by <0.1 seconds. I find this astounding! If you are so inclined, you can find clips of the end of these races on YouTube.

My daughter and I stumbled upon the museum while walking through town in February 2026 and it was actually quite busy. Several of the houses were open to explore and there were pony rides and sleigh rides available. There were also some “actors” working outside some of the buildings. Great for kids and adults!

Comment on Things To Do In Bergen When It Rains by Darcy /bergen-when-it-rains/#comment-1048412 Fri, 17 Apr 2026 10:05:19 +0000 /?p=39203#comment-1048412 We moved from Seattle to Bergen almost 5 years ago. Even for us, Bergen is wet. However, after traveling around Norway, which is indeed beautiful, we found Bergen the most beautiful. There are so many hiking trails practically in the city and for all levels. Lots of museums, including the museums housed on the University in Bergen campus. There Grieghallen for symphony, ballet, music concerts, etc. – if coming at Christmas time, try to see Sissel in concert. She’s a local, as well as a national treasure, for good reason! Bergen has an annual marathon run through the city and mountainside, ann annual 7 mountain race, annual bike races, and huges music and food festivals in spring and fall. Bergen even has its own cinnamon bun created here in Bergen about 500 years ago, called skillingsbolle. That should not be missed. At time of writing we have at least 4 Michelin starred restaurants in town. There is also the newly renovated (and refurbished) restaurant on top of fløyen which has incredible views while you dine. We love it here and never have nothing to do, rain or shine! A city that glitters in the rain.
Thanks, David, for your years of sharing all that Norway has to offer to the world. We appreciate you, and have been your loyal subscribers from before our move here.
