We were lucky enough to rent one of the 4 wooden cabins on the sea front to the left of the bay. There was a small boat with an outboard motor with the house so we were able to go out fishing (unsuccessfully) and enjoy another perspective on the fjord. We went in swimming one day. The water gets very deep quickly and you need to wait until the afternoon in the hope the sun has warmed the water a bit.
At that time you could rent a bike and cycle up the valley or along the coast. Flam is a beautiful spot and I would love to return some day
