I mentioned to a genealogist/friend that my 10th great-grandmother, Anneke Jans, was born about 1605 in Vleckere (Flekkeroy), Vest Adger, Norway. I wondered why she and her parents had Dutch-sounding names. He told me that in the 1600s there was timber trading between the Netherlands and Norway. Now I understand the connection. The family eventually migrated to New Amsterdam, New Netherlands (New York City) and Upstate New York. What a revelation. I wish I could visit Norway someday.

Ballast they left behind filled in some shoreline and formed the Dutch Garden. My wife’s grandparents were Dutch. Mine were Norwegian. And so it continues.

This goes on the list of possible places to come and see when (DV) we get to Norway for a holiday. Thank you for your wonderful articles about Norway.

A lot of Dutch (and Germans) in Norway as part of the Hanseatic League stayed and married Norwegians. Like a number of Bergen families mine has a number of Dutch and German links such as Geelmuyden, van Kuhle etc etc

I’ve been to Flekkefjord a few times, but didn’t know about this area. My husband and his parents and sisters are in Kvinesdal right now, so I shared this blog with them. Hopefully they will get a chance to walk through.
