My father was born in Trondheim in 1904, as Sverre Gjolme. We have been told that his father,Sivert Gjolme born in 1880, was the man who placed the spire on Nidaros cathedral.We would love to have any documentation of this.We visited there in 2023 and were awestruck!

What a fantastic article. I have just been reading information about my family history and it mentions that my Great Grandfather, Emil Bernhard Nergaard, (son of Ole Ingerbreksen Nergaard from Kvikne) carried bricks as a child to help build the Cathedral which took 33 years to build. He was born in Trondheim in 1870 so from the information I have read, I can only assume this must have been the rebuild that commenced in 1869. Emil left Norway and moved to England as a young man but the information talks about how he returned to visit Norway with his wife for their 25th wedding anniversary and he took her to see the Cathedral. I am yet to visit Trondheim but when I do, the Cathedral is now top of my list of places to visit. I wonder if it is still possible to see the areas that he and Ole worked on. Would you have any photos of the copper bell inside ? My great great great grandfather was a copper smith and cast that bell, the names of his thirteen children are inside.

I have visited Trondheim many times as well as the cathedral. In 1989 as we visited there was a rather large cemetery built on a slope on the grounds, filled with many headstones and large trees. On visiting in 2017 the cemetery of the past was no
longer there, the slope flattened and jus a few headstones, but still dramatic.
The cathedral is still among the highlights of my trips to Norway.
