I’ve been searching for a farm, or village in the sogn og fjordane area… called Dybedal… To help understand why my grandpa and his family changed last names from Grov to Dybedal between the 1891 census and the 1900 census. I found the “Grov Farm”
but can’t locate anything under Dybedal. After research, I found that it was customary to add a last name as the farm or village they were from.

My grandpa was Ole Lassesen Grov on 1891 Census,

Then Ole L. Dybedal on the 1900 census.

His parents also changed names.

Any information about “Dybedal”
would be greatly appreciated!

Any photos of the Stordal, Eidsdal or Norddal area around 1910 would be awesome. Also any of the Cod Liver Oil Cannery in Alesund during the same time would awesome.

My great grandfather, Hans Sagabugti Johnsen born January 20th, 1850 was from Hvidseid, Telemarken, Norway. His father was Jon Olavsen Sagabugti. They were Carpenters; fishermen and farmers. I have no photos of him except from Watrous, Saskatchewan, Canada. How would I go about find photos of him or his family before his birth or before his emigration to Minnesota, USA in the 1870s??? His wife, MargitThorstesten was born in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway on February 18, 1857. Her father was Thorsten Halvorsen Helleskaas. Thanks ! I hope somehow that there’s a way someone here can help me. We’re planning on arriving on Norway in 2022 for an ancestry tour if possible. How would we find photos??

Thank you for the link to the regional photo archive in Sogndal. If we’d only known when my family visited there in summer 2018! So I went to the archive’s website, and thanks to at least some familiarity with Nynorsk and the ability to work out the rest via Bokmal and Google Translate, I started searching the archive and right away found photographs of my great-great-great grandfather Hans Jensen Hegdahl and his wife Mari from Øvreset and Innvik. Don’t know if I ever would have located this photograph and shared it with my extended family members if not for this connection. Thanks! I look forward to doing further research in that area soon.

Hi David what great photos I was interested to observe in the wedding photos the women were not wearing national dress. When my daughter got married in Norway all the female guests were wearing their national dress from their particular region. Do you know when this became the custom? Thankyou
