Before leaving the States, I had hired a small 50 ft. cruiser, run by the owner and his wife, to take us from the pier in Alesund, into Storfjorden for the day. We were even able to get off a few times, once for a brief picnic. It was a beautiful little fjord adventure not to be missed.

There is one bus operated by Vy that goes from Ålesund to Åndalsnes and then Åndalsnes to Geiranger, but it’s summer only. The other option is this one-way trip that combines a local bus with a passenger ferry:

What are my best options? Can I combine a bus to Hellesylt for the ferry to Geiranger, then bus around the north side back to Ålesund? I appreciate any feedback. – Elizabeth

I then took the electric cruise to Gudvangen and back to Flåm again. It was my life’s bucket list item & I was not disappointed. The Gudvangen valley is a mystical, mythical experience. The boat features screens with historic & other information which greatly enriches the trip.

I then took a ferry along the entire length of Sognefjord – 5 hours – back to Bergen.

A brilliant 3 day experience.

I took the decision to travel Norway ‘like a local’ and have more control over my days. It worked out perfectly and cost me a fraction of the cost of a cruise.
