Comments on: Are Norwegian Tacos Really Tacos? /norwegian-tacos-mexican/ All Things Norway, In English Sun, 01 Sep 2024 10:03:06 +0000 hourly 1 By: svein /norwegian-tacos-mexican/#comment-1002170 Mon, 05 Sep 2022 07:33:19 +0000 /?p=7975#comment-1002170 Fun fact: Norwegian “Taco” is essentially just the standard Norwegian “lefse” dish that can be traced back to the Viking Age. Just with different ingrediences (beef, exotic vegetables like corn, or chilly, and tex-mex spice). Had Taco not been imported to Norway by the texan oil-workers around the 90’s (iirc), it’s likely we’d still be eating it, but probably using lumper instead.

I caught your little diss of Texan tacos down there! We have a huge Mexican population here so why wouldn’t we have good authentic tacos? Sorry you didn’t try the right place.

Tortillas are lefse.
If you ask a Norwegian to pass you the tacolefse, they would hand you a tortilla. We ask if people prefer taco with shells or with lefse.

The same way tacos are many things, lefse are also many things.

Virtually no filling/taste. I like the Norwegian tacos better – you can use whater you like, all kinds of meat (the best are steak stripes or chicken fillet bits, I think, the minced meat is ok too though) and veggies, no “less is more” at all when it comes to tacos. Beans, seeds, sourcream (this is often one of the things Mexicans etc. find weirdest about Norwegian tacos) – it is good, I think, and tasteful.

I was the same with empanadas in Argentina and kebab in Turkey. It’s good, but frankly I like the “Norwegian” versions better – empanadas, for instance, should be stronger and have more filling than just meat (and possibly cheese) IMO… I guess it’s a case of familiarity and preference. We can all eat what we like and get along fine 🙂

You can buy MASECA or cornmeal and make the tortillas yourself. As for the fillings, the simpler the more authentic. You can even have fish tacos which in my opinion are the best kind of tacos mankind has ever created, we certainly have places serving salmon tacos and salmon skin tacos in Mexico. Here is a recipe I think most Mexicans would agree is pretty authentic:
