Beautiful railway journey indeed, just a shame there aren’t more services (or even bus alternatives) and some imaginative ticketing to make it easier to explore without a vehicle but it’s all doable with a bit of planning. Generally I’ve been lucky with lots of snow in winter for XC skiing (Dombås and Bjorli are both good for this) and good weather on autumn hiking trips – in over a dozen visits I think I’ve only had one half-day of rain ! Good base for exploring up into the Dovre mountains and Rondane.
Åndalsnes is also a handy transport hub with buses to Ålesund and Molde (connecting with trains), which is another nice triangle to explore.
