For my fourth trip to Norway, I made a fifteen day road trip that began in late September 2025 and covered a total of 2900 km through much of eastern and central Norway. I very highly recommend doing this if you have the time and the ability, as you see far more than you will on the train or on a cruise. For anyone from North America, I offer some cautions:
1. Most of the roads are narrow, even the E6 and E39 frequently narrow to two lanes, and you must be cautious and courteous of other drivers (especially the trucks and busses).
2. The average speed is about 60 km/hr, as there are a lot of mountains and a lot of water.
3. Do a lot of planning and do not simply show up to Norway and start driving. You will want to limit your driving to a maximum of 250-300 km per day. You will want to stop frequently and the driving is strenuous.

I was wondering is April an ok time to visit Norway and drive?
I have a week off the 2 nd week of April. We were going to visit friends in Paris but with Air France airfares $$$$$$ and Hotels $$$$$$ this coming spring 2024, we are looking for something else to do. Any suggestions on renting a car and driving hotels etc. I am a 5th generation Norwegian American and my last trip to Norway was about 5 years ago in the winter to Alta

Hi, congratulations on an awesome page!
I’m planning a 10 days to 2 week roadtrip for my husbands big birthday, can you let me know your thoughts on this route, please?
Fly to Stavanger (Pulpit rock) 2 days, Bergen, Flam, Josterdalsbreen National Park 3 days, Alesund, Trondheim (Permalin, we have friends there) 2-3 days, Lillehammer and Oslo 2 days.
If it is even doable or if I totally missed something that should not be missed 🙂

My wife and I are palnning a trip to Norway in June this year.
We are planning to hire a small campervan in Oslo and drive to Tromso via Bergen, Trondheim, and Bodo. We would like to use the coastal route where possible but appreciate this makes the trip a lot slower.
Unfortunatly we will only have 14 days.
We appreciate the extra cost in one way hire but consider it worth it.
As we are from Australia we are used to driving long distances, but also want to enjoy the trip seeing as much as we can on the way.
We understand this is will involve some long driving days, do you think this route is doable?

Nice site David.
I intend to go from Oslo to Flam by car in beginning of March. I did the same route in 2016 during the spring, but I would like to repeat it in the winter.
I cannot find the information if this road – E16 I think – is closed during the winter.
Can you help me on that?

In reply to Doris. Your best bet is to use Google Maps for an estimate, these tend to be very accurate. The biggest variant is with ferries, so it's worth knowing the timetable in advance so you don't arrive and have to end up waiting 30 minutes for a departure. That said, the E39 ferries are very frequent during the day as it's such a main route. Have fun!

Can you help me with an accurate estimate of how much time it takes to drive from Bergen to Stavenger / Naerbo ? I have the estimated distance via the E39, plus note of two ferries. We have two days for a round trip from Bergen to Naerbo and fear this is unrealistic/impossible. We are meeting a cruise at Bergen at the end of these two days , so can’t be late, Too late to change flight reservations. We will make other plans for using the days if our original intended visit is unrealistic.. Please advise. Thank you in advance.
