I thought The Kingdom was his masterpiece, but last night I finished its successor, Blood Ties, and that’s just as good. He has a wonderful knack of making his characters’ motives plausible, for me somehow always staying just the right side of the line beyond which suspension of disbelief is no longer possible.

Brotherhood – and the tension between the good brother and the evil brother – is a constantly reoccurring theme in his books.
