That’s two totally different kinds of travel, so pick the one that suits you best! One is fast, one is slow, it depends if you want to spend a lot of time in Tromsø or prefer seeing the coast by boat. There’s no right answer.

I’ll be arriving around 5:55 pm in March 2025. What would you recommend me to do fly to Tromso or take a train to Trondheim and boat Tromeo via the Lofoten & Vesteralen Islands?

Also, I made a hotel reservation at Comfort Hotel Xpress Tromso. Do you recommend that hotel?

Thanks for any information. This is my first time outside of the US.

I’ve always wanted to visit Tromsø, and your post makes planning the trip seem so much easier. I love the idea of taking the train to Bodø and then catching a ferry. Thanks for sharing your insights!

You can search with SAS and Norwegian, both operate direct flights from Oslo to Tromsø.

Train from Oslo to Trondheim, then the sleeper Bodø, then the boat on to Tromsø via the Lofoten and Vesterålen islands. Cheaper, quicker and more varied than Oslo-Bergen by train and then boat all the way to Tromsø. (My longest trip with Hurtigruten was Bergen – Trondheim and, fun though it was, 36h was enough for me.)

I take the permission to contact you because your look like a good advisor.
I plan a 2weeks trip in Norway but I have no idea where I putting my feet into.
I will land to Oslo and I would like to do a road trip until Tromsoe.
First of all it is realistic?
It’s better to do a small road trip in south and north and fly to tromsoe 😅
As you can see I’m lost.
I will be grateful if you can have me any tips 😊
Have a great evening
Clotilde

We flew into Oslo, took the train downtown and visited the Christmas market. Took the train from Oslo to Røros, then Onto Trondheim where we flew to Tromsø.Best trip ever. The northern lights were epic, as were the sled dogs.

Apparently the coastal line, going in and out of every single little bay and in and out of every fjord, starting at the Swedish boarder in the South and ending at the Russian boarder in the North, is about 20’000km!

In 2018, my wife and I decided to spend a few days around Christmas in Tromsø and then spend New Year’s Eve with an English girl friend of ours in Hegra, not too far from Trondheim. So we flew from Geneva to Kirkenes via Copenhagen and Oslo. We spent the night in Kirkenes and took the Hurtigruten to Tromsø which took us about a day and a half, if I remember correctly. I must say that traveling with this coastal, or should I say “postal” route is a delight!! We both have only nice things to say about the crew members, they were smiling, friendly, service minded and polite and went that extra (nautical) mile to make sure your travel experience was satisfactory. The same went for the second ship from Tromsø to Trondheim, so it wasn’t just a coincidence with the first ship. The only thing we could criticise were the prices of the excursions which were quite prohibitif; there was a snow scooter expedition that went across a mountain at night and where you could catch up with the ship on the other side of the mountain. It was actually more expensive than the outside-double-cabine-all-inclusive-tickets from Kirkenes to Tromsø.
